Have you ever noticed that when you are going through a tough time, everyone around you seems to know how to be happy is emphatically cheery, and just plain more positive? Happiness can be found!
When you are hurting everything is amplified, including your best friend who just found the love of her life. It can be harder when things are looking grim for you and the rest of the world is filled with happiness.
How do you handle yourself when all you want to undeniably do is cry?
How to be happy
A good cry does wonders for you when you are down. The release of emotions can not only be a part of your healing, but it lets go of tension and gives you more focus rather than trying to bottle it up. Letting go through the physical expression of tears is a tangible part of pain that you can actually see and feel. Look at a good cry as a cleansing, washing the pain away in the literal sense.
Do something that makes you feel good
During times of trouble, we tend to hide out. Try this instead–Go volunteer for a cause or something that makes you feel good. If the PTA needs a new board member or your local church has an event coming up, go help out. This gives you a new sense of purpose and can help your mood tremendously. When we do something for people or things we care about, it makes us feel happiness and is an important step on how to be happy.
Learn a new skill
We don’t mean you have to go crazy on this one, but learning something new gives you new direction. Have you always wanted to journal, craft, or take up art? Learn pilates, make jewelry, or learn to garden? Now is the perfect time to take baby steps to climbing out of your pain. A new skill opens up new possibilities for you to build your confidence. Little wins on learning something new is a building block for the next thing you want to tackle. This can help with making you feel happiness a little more everyday.
Watch things that really make you LOL
A friend who was diagnosed with cancer stated that she was only going to fill her time with things and people who made her laugh. She killed her cancer with laughter. Seriously. Netflix + On Demand services became her medicine and it can work for you too! When you are laughing stress relief is real. If your having a really down few days, finding tv and movies that really make you laugh can be food for your soul. Try it.
Surround yourself with people who believe in you
Nothing makes us feel better than a chat with someone who really knows you. The folks who love you and believe in you no matter what is your tribe. Try spending time with those people (even if they are ickky happy) and just be yourself. Your tribe will always let you just be yourself. You can enjoy the comfort of having a bad day. Your true supporters will be there for you no matter what.
Cut yourself some slack
You don’t have to have it all figured out just yet. If taking one day at a time, is all you can do, do that. Sometimes even one day is too long. Honey, take the next hour at a time if that’s all you can do. We’ve all been there, and we know that we can be so hard on ourselves. Cut yourself some slack, slow down, and realize your pain will take its own time. You are not on someone else’s schedule. This is your journey. No one else’s. Give yourself time and don’t be so hard on yourself and you will know how to be happy.
